I am in Chengdu where the earthquake mainly traumatized most of the population...when it hit, although some 90km from the epicentre, it was strong enought to sway tall buildings like palm trees, pandemonium breaking out as thousands of people spilled out of buildings, shopping centres and apartment blocks; some threw themselves from windows, rushed into the streets only to be knocked down by cars. The river splashed against its embankment from side to side exposing part of the riverbed. Three days in the aftermath, many families are still camping outside, on footpaths, parks, squares and open spaces, as aftershocks and tremors like some rolling-strike unnerve us. Structural damage and how it would withstand another shake is on the minds of everyone. Psychologically now, some are on edge as phantom tremors and heart-beat magnify the slightest vibration. Constant information updates, some conflicting, some fear-driven keep spreading, causing food and water shortages as people scramble to empty shelves of every supermarket and corner store. Doctors in hospitals are frenetically working in pools of blood on emergency cases as casualties with multiple fractures are relegated down the order of priority. The gates have been opened for foreign experts to help with rescue operations. It is hard to put a figure on casualties and fatalities here in Chengdu (less than a thousand) but now there is a projected estimate of over 50,000 deaths and missing which could escalate to double its forecast as more reports keep coming in from provincial areas. The expatriate community here has rallied to organise fund raising, collect medical supplies, food and clothing and rescue tools to help. Donations have contributed to hundreds of thousands of RMB. The blood banks are full. This is the picture in Chengdu in sharp contrast to the devastation and despairing efforts to rescue thousands buried under rubble in the north of Sichuan.
